What is Alpha?
Is There More To Life?
Alpha provides everyone the opportunity to explore the meaning of life in a relaxed, friendly setting. The Alpha course usually meets once a week for 10 weeks, including a powerful one-day retreat. Sessions begin with a meal, followed by a short talk, and time to discuss the topic where everyone is welcome to contribute their opinions.
During the discussion, everyone is welcome to contribute their opinion. No question is considered too simple or hostile. Questions might include: Who is Jesus? What does the cross mean to you? What do you think God’s plan is for you?
Courses vary in size, from one small group meeting in a home, to hundreds of people in a church. Some courses are held over morning coffee or during a lunch hour. Most are evening courses, typically lasting 2 hours. No two Alphas look the same, but they generally have three key things in common: food, a talk, and good conversation.
This year, due to the pandemic, all of the Alpha sessions through Our Lady of Perpetual Help will be conducted online, and will be kept to 1 hour.
Who Is Alpha For?
All are welcome! We do not assume any background knowledge of or belief in Christianity. You are free to discuss as much or as little as you wish. Some people want to get beyond religion and find a relationship with God that is life-changing. Others come for the close, long-lasting friendships that are built during the Alpha course.
Many guests have never been to church, others may have attended church occasionally but feel they have never really understood the basics of the Christian faith. Everyone is welcome.
How Much Will It Cost?
There is no charge for attending the Alpha course!

What to Expect
Food – Whether it’s a group of friends gathered around a kitchen table, or a quick catch-up over coffee and dessert, food has a way of bringing people together. It’s no different at Alpha. We always start with food because it’s a great way to encourage community and get to know each other.
Talk – Generally 30 minutes long, the talks are designed to engage and inspire conversation. They explore the big issues around faith and unpack the basics of Christianity, addressing questions such as Who is Jesus? and How can we have faith?
Discussion – The most important part of Alpha, the chance to share thoughts and ideas on the topic. There’s no obligation to say anything, and there’s nothing you can’t say. It’s an opportunity to hear from others and contribute your own perspective in an honest, friendly, and open environment.
